Workout Recovery Mint Chip Smoothie

Summer is here and it is hot, hot, hot outside. Recover from a grueling workout while satisfying your sweet tooth with a delicious ice cream-inspired smoothie –mint chocolate chip! This smoothie is perfectly balanced to repair muscles, restore energy and satisfy hunger.

What is one of the most common post-workout drinks? Aside from the classic water and protein powder mixed in a shaker bottle, it’s smoothies. Fueling up with a refreshing smoothie after a tough workout is a great way to jump start the recovery process by giving your body the nutritional needs to repair muscles and replenish energy levels.

Most smoothies are full of sugar which is the opposite of what we need post-workout. To build a nutritious smoothie, I always encourage this balanced formula: ½ cup fruit, 1 serving healthy fats, 1 serving protein, handful of leafy greens and 1 cup unsweetened liquid.

With summer in full swing, it’s the perfect time to pull out the blender and whip up a delicious, refreshing smoothie. Flavor is everything, and this smoothie tastes just like a mint chip milkshake. Except, it’s actually good for you.

This mint chip smoothie is the perfect post-workout fuel because:

  • Bananas and avocado are a fantastic source of potassium which can help prevent muscle cramping and fatigue.
  • Cacao nibs are high in magnesium which has been shown to reduce lactate build up in the muscles, enhancing exercise performance.

Mint Chip Smoothie

Serves 1

  • 1 cup spinach
  • ¼ cup mint leaves
  • ¼ avocado
  • 2 tablespoons cacao nibs
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (or 1 cup plain Greek yogurt)
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice)

Place all of the ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and enjoy.
