Meet Brian

Meet Dr. Brian Lane, a member at MVP Metro Club and a Urologist at Corewell Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

During a personal training session at MVP Metro Club in 2018, Lane noticed an odd tightening feeling in his leg.

As a physician, Lane knew something wasn’t right. The discomfort in his leg ended up being the result of a tumor. Lane was diagnosed with Myxoid/Round Cell Liposarcoma (MRCLS), a rare form of cancer that grows in your body’s fat cells.

Lane began treatment immediately, but by 2021, his cancer was back. At that time, his doctors estimated that he had two to three years to live. But he didn’t stop fighting.

Today, Lane is focused on his wellness now more than ever.

Enduring radiation therapy, four cancer surgeries, one clinical trial, and 17 rounds of chemotherapy (and counting) was no easy feat, but Lane has learned to live each day to its fullest.

One thing that helped him to keep fighting through the past few years was his relationship with MVP and his experience doing personal training. He credits this with helping him be stronger mentally and physically, helping him tackle the challenges that lie ahead of him.

Lane has been training with Robert Phillips, Director and Personal Trainer at MVP Metro Club for five years. They have developed a deep friendship that goes beyond fitness and Lane considers Phillips a close friend and supporter of his.

When asked what wellness means to him, Lane stated that “wellness is about mental health, minimizing stress and maximizing rest, and being in tune with your body.” He believes that the guidance he has gotten through training with Phillips has helped him to focus on just that.

“You can’t go it alone, having support is huge” stated Lane. He encourages others to see fitness as a key factor in both your mental and physical health and to connect with others while working towards your fitness goals. Phillips, along with the MVP Metro Club team, has been there to support him along the way.

“Perseverance and Fighter are two words I think of when I think of Brian Lane,” said Phillips.

“Having been Brian’s trainer and friend for many years, I have witnessed his health journey inside and outside the gym. Brian had many opportunities to give up and he never did. Even in his darkest and lowest moments, Brian was able to find the strength to keep going; even when he didn’t want to. It has been a great pleasure to work with Brian and I am inspired by him daily,” said Phillips.

Our MVP community is so encouraged by Lane’s commitment to wellness and his strength to tackle each day ahead. We want to recognize any other members who may also be on a similar health journey and encourage them too to stay strong. We are honored to be a part of your story and are cheering you on.
